Canada — Jasper, Alberta Day 2

Jasper — Day 2 of a 2-Day Trip to the Canadian Rockies

Day 2 was another cold, but bright day in Jasper. We had to bundle up. We headed out to Maligne Lake for snowshoeing. The lake landscape is beautiful and the snowshoeing is enjoyable.

Day 2

Jasper

After having our bagels for breakfast, we headed to the rental house to grab some snowshoes. The hotel staff mentioned that Maligne Lake were good locations for snowshoeing. Medicine Lake was on the way to Maligne Lake, so we stopped to enjoy the view.

Medicine Lake

On the way to Maligne Lake, traffic came to a stop due to mountain ram on the road. The ram had surrounded one particular car in front of us, but the rest of traffic slowly drove around the mountain ram.

We reached Maligne Lake after about an hour drive from the Fairmont. The lake was frozen over with a thick sheet of ice and another layer of snow on top. It was perfect for snowshoeing. The lake is surrounded by the mountains and there were a few other groups in the area as well. There is a path along the lake you can follow, or you can decide to create your own!

Snowshoeing was a real workout! It was late afternoon after snowshoeing on Maligne Lake, we were exhausted and hungry. We stopped by Jasper Pizza Place for a late lunch and ordered BBQ chicken wings and the Cavell wood-fired pizza. After lunch, we headed back to the Fairmont and sat by the fireplace at the main lodge. We visited the heated pool, but did not stay long because it was extremely busy.

Jasper Brewing Beer

For dinner, we headed to Jasper Brewing for dinner. Jasper Brewing has been open since 2005 and is popular in the area for its local beer and food. I got a flight of beer which included 6 glasses. The beer was nice, my favourite was the Babe Blueberry Vanilla Ale. For food, we ordered the Korean BBQ chicken wings, the classic burger, and the fried chicken sandwich. The chicken wings were delicious — crunchy and saucy — but the fried chicken sandwich felt too heavy for me.

After dinner, we headed back to our hotel for the evening. We left Jasper early the next day and drove 5 hours to Edmonton Airport, just in time for my flight back to Vancouver, BC. Good thing we left early. We were hit with a snow storm on the drive to Edmonton which increased our travel time.
