Duoro Valley — Day 6 of a 8-Day Trip in Portugal
We went on an Airbnb tour of Duoro Valley on Day 6. This tour was amazing – it included transport, wine, meals, a boat ride on the Duoro River, and an awesome tour guide! Duoro Valley itself is magnificent and is home to many wineries. There are options to get to Duoro Valley by train, but a tour is the easiest if you’re looking at visiting wineries (and it is reasonably priced – about $315 CAD for the two of us!)
Day 6
Duoro Valley
We had to be at the Duoro Valley tour meeting spot at 8:30am. It was only about a 10 minute walk from our Airbnb. On the way to the meeting spot, we stopped at a bakery called Farina for a pastry. The check-in process was easy and we were on the van shortly to Duoro Valley. The tour group was small – only 6 of us. The drive is just under 2 hours to the first stop, a winery called Quinta Da Fonte do Milho. I was a bit worried on the drive because Porto was extremely foggy that morning. Our tour guide told us this was normal and that because the Duoro Valley is surrounded by mountains and hills, it will be clear once we enter the valley. He was right! The skies were blue and it was warm, no fog anywhere.
Quinta Da Fonte do Milho is a family owned winery. The owner came out to greet us and we snacked on olives, jams, tapenades, olive oil and bread, almonds, and of course wine!

Afterwards, our tour guide took us to Pinhao. On the way, he stopped at a spectacular viewpoint of the valley.

Once at Pinhao, it was time for lunch at Taberna do Rio. We were served fish, mushroom rice, potatoes, beef, salad, and more wine! The potatoes were my favourite.
After lunch, it was time to board the boat for a sail along the Duoro River. This was a lovely boat ride with wonderful views of the wine terraces.

Next, we headed to another winery. I can’t recall the winery, but it had lovely views.

It was now time to head back to Porto. The van dropped us off near our Airbnb, we thanked our guide and said our goodbyes. We then walked to Gazela Cachorrinhos da Batalha for dinner and ordered the cachorrinhos (Portuguese hot dog), steak sandwiches, and fries.

On the way back to our Airbnb, we stopped by the grocery store to pick up a carton of gazpacho for breakfast.
