Portugal – Day 1

Lisbon — Day 1 of a 8-Day Trip in Portugal

Day 1 was half travel, half activities. We flew from Naples to Portugal in the morning and arrived in Lisbon around 2pm. The flight was about 4 hours long. By the time, we picked up our bags and headed to our hotel, it was about 4pm. Portugal was a cooler climate than Italy, but could get warm during the day. At the airport, we picked up a 72 hour Lisboa card, which gives unlimited transit access (i.e. cable car, bus, trains and free/discounts on activities over 72 hours. It is definitely a good deal. There are also options for lesser days – 24 and 48 hours – so purchase the one that works for your trip.

Day 1

We stayed across from Assembly of the Republic, which was a great centralized area. The Assembly of the Republic is the parliament building in Lisbon, there are guards who patrol the grounds.

After offloading our bags at the hotel, we took the cable car to the Barrio Alto Neighbourhood. We headed to the Santa Justa Lift as it was included in our Lisboa card and waited in line longer than we should have for the Santa Justa Lift. Although the elevator is interesting, you could also walk to the top of the Santa Justa Lift instead. I would not wait longer than 10 minutes to go up the lift. At the top, you get a view of Lisbon’s red roofs. Near the lift is the Carmo Convent Ruins, which as the name indicates, is the ruins of a catholic convent and also serves as a museum.

We wandered the streets for a bit afterwards and for dinner, we headed to Leve Leve – Tapas Bar for our first Portuguese meal. We waited about 15 minutes before a table opened up. The staff were extremely welcoming and the food was delicious. We ordered a pitcher of the red sangria, calamari, ham and garlic bread, and flamed chorizo.

To finish up our day, we had Portuguese egg tarts (Pasteis de Nata) at Manteigaria for dessert. Yum!
